Just another Monday night

December 22, 2010

Monday evening of this week (December 20th) we were invited to celebrate a friend’s birthday. He was also planning on proposing to his girlfriend while ice skating later in the evening. Liz and I were planning on taking pictures of the proposal since she couldn’t go skating (being pregnant and all). When we got to the ice rink, we saw a friend who had already arrived and started skating. Tim was giving me a hard time about not skating (I haven’t skated since I was about 10). He upped the ante by offering to pay for me; I told him if he paid I’d skate. It turned out to be a blast. It took a good 20 minutes before I figured out how to actually move without falling. Liz took video and I posted it on Twitter and Facebook (I mentioned that it looked like I was a giraffe that had just been born).

The proposal went as Michael had planned and she Danielle said yes. We continued to skate for another half hour or so then went to Starbucks to warm up. The snow continued pretty heavily throughout the evening which made getting home interesting but fun.

Liz and I had a blast. We got to share a special evening with good friends, she got to see her husband act like a buffoon, and I got to see my beautiful wife bundled up and covered with snow J

Yay, it’s my birthday

December 8, 2010

I remember when I was younger, my birthday was this magical day on the calendar. I could have and do anything that I wanted. I would often get a party on the day of my birthday, then would have another party the following weekend where all of my friends would come over and spend the night at my house. I was asked what I wanted for dinner, I was asked what I wanted to do, what movie I wanted to watch… it was my freshman year of college when I learned that the magic of my birthday had died.

The first semester of my freshman year was the 2nd most difficult semester of my college career. I was taking nothing but weed-out courses and they were taking its toll. My birthday fell on the Sunday before finals week that year. I hadn’t gone home that weekend, so there were no celebrations there. My roommate didn’t have finals until the middle of the week so he wasn’t coming back for a few days. I didn’t have a solid group of friends yet and I tend to like solitude anyway. Sure I received phone calls from friends and family, but for the most part I spent that day alone. I think that was my first of many ‘whoa, I’m an adult now’ moments.

Now don’t get me wrong, my friends and family do make this day special for me every year. My beautiful and wonderful wife gets so excited on my birthday that I don’t think I’ve ever received a gift on my birthday; she can’t stand it and gives me my gift the night before. She makes me special dinners and deserts and prevents me from doing any work around the house. I look forward to it still, but for different reasons that I used to.  Mainly, I love the fact that my wife is more excited about my birthday than I am.

I’m all for special days, I just don’t like those special days to focus on me.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows

December 4, 2010

We were supposed to see the new Harry Potter movie with friends this evening. Unfortunately, through unforeseen circumstances this wasn’t the case and Liz and I saw the movie by ourselves (which was quite refreshing, actually). We really wanted to see it with Brock and Jen as just a month ago we spent a whole weekend with them watching all of the DVD’s to prep for the Deathly Hallows. Despite the lack of friends, I really enjoyed the new Harry Potter movie. It’s been some time since I’ve read the book so some parts were surprises as I’d forgotten some of the details in the book. The more I reflect on the movie, the more I like it. This might be my favorite Harry Potter movie thus far.

Can’t wait for part 2!

Attempting domain forwarding

December 3, 2010

To make it look like I know what I’m doing, I’ve purchased the domain www.woejillis.com and am attempting to forward that domain to my WordPress blog. So far so good but it said it might be a little while before it starts to work. Here goes nothing…

Getting to know WordPress

December 3, 2010

I am somewhat familiar with Blogger but have been told that WordPress is where it’s at when it comes to blogging. Blogger made it super easy but it was lacking. I feel like I have to try harder to do simple things in WordPress but the tools and widgets it offers is incredible. I am able to do a lot more and my blog looks as though I know what I’m doing.

Now I need to figure out how label posts via email.
